About the Jail

The old Jail sits next to the County Museum. The jail was built in 1892 and housed prisoners for nearly 70 years. The first floor of the building is constructed of granite stones recycled from an earlier jail constructed in 1842. The upstairs, with its original iron barred cells, has been virtually unchanged since last housing prisoners in 1962 and an exhibit of law enforcement memorabilia.
The structure is a Virginia Historic Landmark. The jail has been renovated and is open to the public.
