CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Chesterfield County Police continue to investigate a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred in the southbound lanes of Route 288 at the Midlothian Turnpike overpass at about 9:05 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5.
Police said a 2017 Honda Pilot, driven by Samuel J. Blair Jr., 62, turned left from Watkins Centre Parkway into the westbound lanes of Midlothian Turnpike; the vehicle was traveling east in the westbound lanes. The vehicle then ran off the road and into the median between the Midlothian Turnpike overpass over Route 288. The vehicle traveled down the median, struck an embankment, went airborne and crossed several lanes of traffic before landing in the southbound lanes of Route 288.
The driver and one passenger were transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. A second passenger, identified as Cynthia D. Blair, 61, of the 14200 block of Leafield Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Samuel Blair, also of the 14200 block of Leafield Drive, has been charged with driving while intoxicated in relation to this crash. He remains in the hospital and additional charges are pending.
