CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — For the past decade, Chesterfield County has ranked among the top 10 localities on the nationwide Digital Counties Survey by setting an example for the innovative use of technology in local government. Chesterfield placed second among counties nationwide with populations under 500,000.

The Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties recently announced the winners of the 17th annual Digital Counties Survey. The survey identifies the best technology practices among U.S. counties, including initiatives that streamline service delivery, encourage collaboration, enhance cybersecurity and other factors.

“To be ranked second in the nation this year and among the top 10 in the country for the past decade, reaffirms Chesterfield’s commitment to enhancing programs and services through technology to better serve our citizens,” said Chief Information Officer Barry Condrey. “We are very proud to be one of the country’s top digital counties, and our citizens can rest assured that we challenge ourselves each day to find better ways to deliver local government information and services.”

Survey judges identified a wide range of efforts across several areas in determining Chesterfield’s ranking. The survey notes that Chesterfield County is “making efforts regionally to improve daily life through the thoughtful use of technology.”

The county recently redesigned its website to include better citizen engagement features and optimized search engine technology. Over the last year, Chesterfield County’s Department of Information Systems Technology completed 83 projects, including the development of a Real Estate Assessment Data application to replace lagging technology and create a user-friendly citizen interface that integrates seamlessly with the county’s new website.

The Digital Counties Survey is conducted annually in the spring. All U.S. counties are invited to participate in the survey, which examines each county’s comprehensive technology plans and programs. Awards are presented at the annual NACo conference held in July.
