CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — Michael Chernau, deputy county attorney, was awarded the A. Robert Cherin Award on Friday, April 5, from the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia, Inc., or LGA, for his exemplary public service. He is the third attorney from the Chesterfield County Attorney’s Office to win the award.
The A. Robert Cherin Award for an Outstanding Deputy or Assistant Local Government Attorney honors one who has demonstrated exemplary public service that reflects a personal commitment to the highest ethical and professional principles. Nominations are accepted from the entire LGA membership prior to their spring conference and is awarded to one nominee each year.
“The award was created to recognize what Mike gives Chesterfield County every day,” said Jeffrey Mincks, county attorney. “Mike is respected throughout Virginia for his work ethic, his professionalism and his exemplary character, and I cannot think of a more deserving recipient of the 2019 award.” Mincks won the award back in 1997 when he served as deputy county attorney. Chesterfield Senior Deputy County Attorney Stel Parthemos also won in 2013.
There is little Chernau has not done for Chesterfield County in his 28 years with the County Attorney’s Office. He has served as an assistant, senior assistant, and deputy county attorney for Chesterfield. Chernau works in areas as diverse as planning, aviation, bankruptcy, taxation, parks and recreation, and civil rights, but he may be best known for his work representing the Department of Social Services.
The LGA was founded in 1975 and has over 300 member agencies, represented by more than 800 public and private attorneys. They provide continuing education credit specifically focused on local government law, furnish information and support to assist local government attorneys in performing their duties, offer a forum for communication and ideas for local government attorneys and help file amicus briefs when litigation is significant to local government.
The A. Robert Cherin Award was established in 1994 and renamed in 2000 to honor the memory of Bob Cherin, an outstanding local government attorney who served in the Fairfax County Attorney’s Office for 25 years.
