On March 25, Chesterfield County officials joined the staff of Mari Signum for a tour of their plant at 8310 Shell Road.
Mari Signum is the world’s preeminent environmentally responsible commercial Chitin extraction plant. Chitin, which is non-toxic and has potent anti-fungal, antibiotic, anti-microbial, anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties, is extracted from discarded shrimp shells that would be considered “waste” for landfills, or that would be relocated to coastal landfill dumps.
Chitin is key to innovations in medicines pharmaceutical sciences, agriculture and mitigation of water pollution, and contributes to a far-ranging spectrum of beneficial applications in human health and environmental benefits. Mari Signum’s technology uses environmentally benign Ionic Liquids in a recirculating system - a pioneered process developed at the University of Alabama and now licensed to Mari Signum exclusively. This incomparable processing method replaces many industries’ reliance on toxic petrochemicals.
