Roadway improvements are in progress across Chesterfield, providing the infrastructure needed to alleviate congestion in one of Virginia’s fastest-growing localities – and more are on the way.
Here is a roundup of the county’s ongoing and planned major transportation projects:
ROUTE 288 SOUTHBOUND TO ROUTE 360 WESTBOUND OFF-RAMP
Construction began recently on the Route 288 southbound to Route 360 westbound off-ramp project, which includes lengthening the ramp, widening it to two lanes and building a park-and-ride lot at the Chesterfield Career and Technical Center @ Hull.
A high volume of traffic exits Route 288 southbound onto Route 360 westbound during the afternoon rush hour, with more than 1,700 vehicles in one travel lane. As a result, vehicles back up onto Route 288 beyond the deceleration lane, causing a pattern of rear-end crashes.
Scheduled for completion in fall 2025, the improvements will enhance safety by reducing peak-hour traffic backups on Route 288 and improve travel times for motorists.

OTTERDALE ROAD DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS
Work also continues on the third and final phase of the Otterdale Road Drainage Improvements project. The new roadway is taking shape and progress is being made on the new bridge structure that will traverse Otterdale Branch.
The project is intended to significantly enhance drainage and minimize the likelihood of future flooding along the Otterdale Road corridor. That stretch of roadway has been compromised by high water during heavy rain events, posing a public safety hazard by effectively trapping residents in their neighborhoods.
Kokosing Construction Company Inc. completed the first two new Otterdale Road crossings – at Horsepen and Blackman creeks – ahead of schedule. The Otterdale Branch crossing is projected to be opened to traffic in December.

NASH ROAD EXTENSION
The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors recently authorized the Director of Procurement to award a $25.1 million construction contract to Wagman Heavy Civil Inc. for the Nash Road Extension Project.
As part of Chesterfield’s fiscal year 2018 capital improvement plan, the board authorized staff to proceed with design and right-of-way acquisition for the project, which will relieve peak-hour congestion at the intersection of Beach Road and Route 10 by providing motorists an alternate route.
It includes construction of a new roadway from the current intersection of Nash and Beach roads to Route 10, a roundabout at the Nash/Beach intersection, a bridge over Swift Creek and a new signalized intersection at Route 10.
The county received four construction bids in August, ranging from $25.1 million to $28.4 million. Wagman Heavy Civil Inc. was determined to have submitted the lowest responsive and responsible bid.
More information about the Nash Road project is available on the county website.

SEPTEMBER PUBLIC HEARING
At its Sept. 27 meeting, the Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing to consider the appropriation of $67 million in federal and state funding to advance 14 new and existing transportation projects.
Over half of the funding, $34.9 million, is targeted for four projects in the western Route 360 corridor:
* $12.4 million for a Continuous Green-T intersection at Route 360 and Brad McNeer parkway
* $10 million for the Bailey Bridge Connector
* $9.3 million for access management improvements and a roundabout on Brad McNeer Parkway
* $3.2 million for triple left turn lanes on Woodlake Village Parkway at Route 360
You can view the full list of proposed improvements in the agenda packet from the board’s Aug. 23 meeting.
