A Question of Religious Freedom: The 1773 Baptist Preacher Trial Reenactment

1773 Baptist Preacher Trial

Join us for an interactive historical performance of the trial in 1773 that led Americans on the path towards religious freedom. This performance will center around the events in 1773 where a minister must obtain an official license from British Crown authorities to preach in public. Archibald Cary, the magistrate of Chesterfield County at that time, arrested individuals who openly broke the law. Citizens across the countryside began to question the Crown's authority to regulate religious teachings.

This free event will take place on Sunday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at the Chesterfield 1917 Historical Courthouse. Pre-registration is required; space is limited. Please call 804-796-7121 or email the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia with your name and the people who will be attending with you. The Historic 1917 Courthouse is an active court and a headcount with names of those attending is required for this historical accurate portrayal.
