CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — Chesterfield County and Chesterfield County Public Library will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Midlothian Library (521 Coalfield Road) on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m.

The event is open to the public and attendees should enter off Coalfield Road. Light refreshments will be available.

The new facility was designed in part as a direct result of input sessions held in the summer of 2019. It will be 25,000 square feet, which is nearly two-thirds larger than the previous building (15,000 square feet) that existed on the same site before closing in 2021. The expectation is that the new facility will open in the winter of 2023.

In addition to offering all of the services that were available at the previous Midlothian Library, the new facility will have the following amenities:

  • improved seating with comfortable chairs for lounging, reading and working
  • a large community meeting room
  • interactive indoor learning features for kids
  • a digital media center
  • an outdoor reading garden
  • an outdoor learning classroom with musical sculptures

The new facility will also include collaborative study and meeting spaces for in-person and virtual meetings as well as a large community meeting room. The spaces will have state-of-the-art technology in order to better facilitate meetings and collaboration.
