In case you missed the Aug. 24 Board of Supervisors meeting, here is a brief recap of items from the board’s monthly work session and business meeting:

ROUTE 60 TRANSIT PILOT

The board appropriated $1.88 million in funding from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, and the required $470,000 local match, to initiate a pilot program for local transit service on a 5-mile stretch of Midlothian Turnpike.

The one-year project will extend GRTC bus service west along Route 60 from its current terminus at the Stonebridge development to Wal-Mart Way. Approximately 12 new stops, eastbound and westbound, will be installed. It also will include construction of a bus layover pad on Wal-Mart Way and bus stop landing pads with benches and/or shelters and trash cans at some stop locations.

Service is anticipated to be provided every 30 minutes from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Saturday and from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Sundays. Details related to operations may be adjusted during the pilot to best respond to riders' needs.

The new route will be evaluated on a quarterly basis using established transit performance measures – including ridership, revenue miles, revenue hours, operating expense and on-time performance -- to track performance over the  one-year duration and to benchmark it against similar routes in the GRTC system.

Chesterfield staff will work with GRTC to identify a ridership goal, and an extensive marketing and outreach campaign will be conducted before service commences, likely in fall 2023.

GENITO/288 SPECIAL FOCUS AREA PLAN

Joanne Wieworka, with Chesterfield’s Department of Planning, presented an update on the Genito/288 special focus area plan during the board’s afternoon work session.

Watch her full presentation below.

PERFORMANCE GRANT AGREEMENT WITH LAKE ADVENTURES LLC

The board voted to approve a performance grant agreement with Lake Adventures LLC, the developer behind a unique 105-acre mixed-use project planned at the intersection of Genito Road and Route 288.

The agreement is explained in detail here.

ELECTION PREPAREDNESS UPDATE

Missy Vera, Chesterfield’s new general registrar and director of elections, briefed the board on her staff’s activities in preparation for the 2022 general election. Early voting begins Sept. 23 and Election Day is Nov. 8.

You can view her presentation in its entirety below.

REOPENING SCHOOLS GRANT

The board accepted and appropriated $1.76 million in grant funding from the Virginia Department of Health to support Chesterfield County Public Schools’ safe reopening for the 2022-23 school year.

The grant provides for COVID-19 testing in K-12 schools and the purchase of portable high-efficiency particulate (HEPA) fans, filtration systems or other items that promote improved air circulation.

CCPS will use the funds to purchase replacement filters for all HEPA units.
