CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Chesterfield County Police continue to investigate a motor vehicle crash that occurred in the 5800 block of Chesterwood Drive at about 8:28 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2022.
Police said the driver of a 2004 Ford 150 was driving on Chesterwood Drive when they lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle, which was occupied by two individuals, left the right side of the roadway, struck a culvert, and overturned. Both occupants were transported to an area hospital. The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger sustained life threatening injuries during the crash and died this morning. The victim’s information is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Franklin Chicas-Chavarria of the 4700 block of Cooks Road in Richmond. Chicas-Chavarria has been charged with DUI maiming, reckless driving, and having an open container of alcohol while operating a motor vehicle. Additional charges are pending at this time. Chicas-Chavarria is being held at the Chesterfield County Jail without bond.
