CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Chesterfield County Police have arrested a suspect in connection to the shooting death of Herber Felipe Hernandez Sucup and malicious wounding of another man on Sept. 13, 2006.
At about 2:17 a.m. on Sept. 13, 2006, police responded to a report of a suspicious situation at a convenience store near the intersection of Route 1 and Dundas Road. At that location, officers found an adult male shooting victim in a vehicle. That victim, identified as Hernandez Sucup, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers followed a blood trail and located another adult male shooting victim in front of Falling Creek Apartments. That victim was transported to an area hospital and ultimately survived his injuries.
Through investigation, detectives determined the shooting occurred in the 6000 block of Cricklewood Drive and identified the shooting suspect as Dimas D. Luna, then age 31. Police obtained warrants for Luna, then of the 6000 block of Cricklewood Drive, for murder, malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Police were unable to locate Luna, who fled the immediate area and ultimately fled the country.
In March 2018, detectives obtained indictments for Luna for first-degree murder, malicious wounding, shooting into an occupied vehicle and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Authorities began pursuing Luna's extradition from Guatemala, where he was then located.
Following years of effort and with help from several other agencies, Luna was extradited to the United States earlier this week. On Jan. 21, 2022, he was taken into custody by Chesterfield County Police at Dulles International Airport. Luna, now age 46, is currently being held at the Chesterfield County Jail without bond.
The U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Department of Justice Office of International Affairs, the U.S. Department of State, Homeland Security Investigations and the Chesterfield County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office assisted Chesterfield County Police during this investigation.
