CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — Today, the Commission for Accreditation of Parks and Recreation Agencies, or CAPRA, awarded the Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation Department with the prestigious CAPRA accreditation at the National Recreation and Park Association annual conference in Indianapolis. This accreditation is one of the highest recognitions a parks and recreation department can attain, and Chesterfield is the first parks and recreation department in the Richmond region, 11th in the state, to earn this accreditation.

The CAPRA designation signifies Chesterfield Parks and Recreation has met all 151 standards of best practices for efficient and effective operations, while providing enhanced services to the public.

“It’s extremely important for Chesterfield Parks and Recreation to receive this accreditation,” said Dr. James Worsley, Chesterfield Parks and Recreation director. “Not only is it a great accolade, but it also gives us an opportunity to evaluate our services to see what we do well and what we can improve upon.”

Chesterfield Parks and Recreation started the process for the CAPRA accreditation in 2016, and in early 2018, submitted documentation to the commission covering 151 national standards for every facet of department operations. The standards represent industry-recognized best practices in parks and recreation, and all segments of the department were evaluated against those standards. Earlier this year, three on-site evaluators visited Chesterfield to review the standards before making a final recommendation to the commission.

“I am extremely excited, and even more excited for our staff, who worked hard to make this accreditation possible,” Worsley said. “We have a great team who put in a lot of hours to get us to where we are today.”

Chesterfield joins 166 parks and recreation agencies in the United States who are CAPRA accredited.
