Chesterfield County Route 111 Bus Service Merges With Route 3B

Chesterfield County Transportation Department

Sept. 13, 2021

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — In its continuing quest to connect Chesterfield bus riders with career, educational and retail opportunities, GRTC Transit System is merging Route 111 with Route 3B – providing continuous bus service along U.S. Route 1 in Chesterfield to Richmond’s Northside.

The newly merged Route 3B line will now run from its southernmost point at Brightpoint Community College (formerly John Tyler Community College) in Chesterfield to the Highland Park neighborhood in Richmond’s Northside effective Sept. 13.

As part of the merger, passengers will no longer have to transfer buses at the Food Lion north of Chippenham Parkway.

The 3B bus line is scheduled to run from 5:15 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 6:15 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays, with no bus service scheduled for Sundays.

Ridership on all GRTC bus routes, including Route 3B, remains Zero Fare until June 30, 2022.

Elimination of the transfer at the Food Lion will make it easier for riders to travel between Chesterfield County and destinations in the city by providing a one-seat trip.

The route change supports continued ridership growth for the bus route along the Route 1 corridor. GRTC’s Route 111 exceeded initial ridership goals; between April 2021 and June 2021, the average number of weekday passengers along Route 1 in Chesterfield was 186, up from 101 between March 2020 and June 2020. Saturday ridership mirrors the same trend, with an average of 174 riders per day from April 2021 to June 2021, versus 96 between March 2020 and June 2020.

GRTC Transit System is the leading provider of public bus service in metro Richmond, with routes throughout Chesterfield and Henrico counties, and the City of Richmond.

The county’s transportation department is working with GRTC and other community stakeholders to potentially expand bus service throughout Chesterfield – including along the Midlothian Turnpike and Hull Street Road corridors and adding a stop to the county’s government complex. However, a timeline for such expansion is not finalized and is being studied by transportation staff.
