CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – A Chesterfield County Police officer was involved in a shooting in Petersburg at about 11:40 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28. The Petersburg Bureau of Police is investigating the incident.
At about 11:25 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, a Chesterfield County Police officer saw a vehicle driving recklessly and with an improper registration in the area of West Hundred Road near the Interstate 95 interchange. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle did not stop and a pursuit began. The suspect vehicle headed south on I-95; as the pursuit continued, additional officers joined. The suspect vehicle exited I-95 at Wagner Road and the pursuit entered Petersburg.
Officers reported the suspects were shooting from their vehicle at the officers. The suspect vehicle stopped abruptly near the intersection of Shields Street and Augusta Avenue in Petersburg, and the first officer in the pursuit swerved to avoid hitting the suspect vehicle. The officer stopped his vehicle alongside the suspect vehicle, exited his vehicle with his gun drawn and ordered the suspects out of the vehicle. The suspect vehicle then abruptly accelerated, forcing the officer to jump back into his vehicle; the suspect vehicle made contact with the officer's arm and his vehicle. At that point, the officer fired shots at the suspect vehicle. The suspect vehicle circled the block before colliding with a parked vehicle and stopping. Two suspects then fled from the vehicle on foot; there was no indication they had been shot.
As is standard practice, the officer who fired his weapon will be placed on administrative duty. Petersburg Bureau of Police will conduct a criminal investigation into the larger incident and officer-involved shooting. Once that investigation is complete, the Chesterfield County Police Department will conduct an administrative review of the incident.
