CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — An online publication with a knack for national rankings has given Chesterfield County high marks as one of the top 500 healthiest communities in the nation.
‘U.S. News & World Report,’ an online news publication known for several of its national rigorous rankings, recently released its report on the nation’s Healthiest Communities for 2021 – ranking Chesterfield No. 345 of 500 communities highlighted in the report.
With the help of a committee who advises the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. News Healthiest Communities rankings scored nearly 3,000 communities on 84 indicators across 10 categories on a scale of zero to 100. The categories included: Infrastructure, Community Vitality, Public Safety, Vitality, Food and Nutrition, Housing, Economy, Education, Equity and Population Health.
Chesterfield is the fifth-healthiest community in metro Richmond, according to the report. The county joins nearby Powhatan, Goochland, Hanover and New Kent counties as the top five healthiest communities in the region and ranks 22nd in the state – gaining high marks for its infrastructure, population health and economy with an overall score of 67.2.
“This national distinction should come as no surprise for those of us who are so fortunate to call this county home,” said Chesterfield Board of Supervisors Chair James “Jim” Holland. “We have always been a regional leader when it comes to enhancing the quality of life for our residents – whether it be through creating employment opportunities, award-winning public schools or through supporting our law enforcement. We are so proud of the diverse community we continue to grow in Chesterfield and are glad to see these efforts being highlighted on a national level.”
Chesterfield County Administrator Dr. Joe Casey said the county will continue to find innovative practices and initiatives to further enhance the quality of life for county residents and businesses.
“Our national ranking should be celebrated, but also serve as a reminder of the work that must continue to maintain Chesterfield as a top destination for families, businesses and visitors,” Casey said. “During the pandemic, our dedicated staff worked tirelessly to serve all our customers by maintaining our parks, libraries and enhancing the way we interact with our customers. It has truly been a team effort and this ranking serves as a reflection of that work.”
