Rebuilding Together Logo

RebuildinRebuilding Groupg Together Richmond was able to serve Ms. Julie, who resides in the Ettrick area of South Chesterfield, VA, with three of its free home repair programs. Ms. Julie Mayfield is 97 years young and has lived in Chesterfield VA her whole life. She purchased her home in 1972. For most of her career she was in the food service industry at a plant and daycare center, and later retired from VSU. Ms. Mayfield has 7 children, 6 girls and 1 boy; her son served in the military.

Every year Rebuilding Together Richmond partners with Herman Allen Plumbing, Heating & Cooling (A Division Of: Bantam’s Plumbing Company, Inc.) to provide a homeowner with a free furnace and installation. When RTR learned that Ms. Julie’s HVAC system was malfunctioning right before winter, they identified her as the perfect candidate for the program. On October 4th, 2019 technicians Plumbing Truckfrom Herman and Allen came to Ms. Julie’s house and installed the new furnace.

Ms. Julie was also a candidate for RTR’s Volunteer Program, where they pair a skilled volunteer team with a home in need of home repairs. This past year there were 9 homes chosen, including Ms. Julie’s! A team from Dominion Energy came out on Friday, October 11th, 2019 and completely a variety of necessary free home repairs in one day! The other 8 teams were also working that weekend, the 11th and 12th, throughout the Ettrick and Matoaca area of South Chesterfield. The final program that Ms. Julie received was RTR’s Contractor Program, which is funded through Chesterfield County’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). Through these funds Ms. Julie was able to receive mold remediation services, install GFCI outlets in each bathroom and her kitchen, repair all her windows that were letting heat escape in the winter time, insulate the home, and replace her roof.

Mayfield Home"I just thank you all and I thank God... I was so nervous about the leak, and my roof was so old, but I just did not have the money [for the repairs] ... but you all have been a blessing to me. And last night, with all that rain and that storm that was going on, I didn’t even have to look because I knew I had a new roof and was safe. Thank you all for working on my home... you all have been a blessing, and I ask that God bless each and every one of you."
