CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred in the 11600 block of Midlothian Turnpike on Wednesday, January 1, 2020.
At approximately 1:41 a.m., an on-duty Chesterfield County Police Officer performed a traffic stop on a vehicle on Midlothian Turnpike, near the Courthouse Road intersection, for suspicion of driving under the influence. As the officer asked the driver a question related to field sobriety, the driver produced a handgun and shot himself. That driver was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition.
Police continue to investigate this incident. The identity of the driver is being withheld until next of kin notifications can be made.
