The public is invited to join the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia to honor those who have served us.
The program will feature the origins of “Taps” which was adapted from “tattoo” by Union Major General Daniel Butterfield for his brigade during July 1862 and with the help of the brigade bugler, Oliver Willcox Norton, “Taps” was created to honor his men while in camp.
John Blair, State Director, Bugles Across America will be speaking on “Taps - 24 Notes of Honor”.
Artifacts from Berkeley Plantation, which was the original site of Taps being played, will be on display for the day in the Chesterfield County Museum.
Thomas Dale High School Band will perform patriotic songs, Chesterfield County Color Bearers and American Heritage Girls will lead the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States Flag and accompany the Banners of the Fallen. Patriotic organizations will lay wreaths at the Memorial Wall.
A special tribute will be given to Tommy Sammons, Chesterfield County's Uncle Sam.
