Commemorate the 400th Anniversary of Falling Creek Ironworks

Saturday, May 4, 2019

The special event on Saturday, May 4 will commemorate the 400th anniversary of the establishment of the first iron furnace. Falling Creek Ironworks Park was the site of the first iron furnace built in the English New World. It was constructed in 1619 by English workers whose expedition was organized by the Virginia Company of London who wished to expand trade and further mine the iron ore from the colony. The first expedition led by Captain Bluett was unsuccessful, so a second expedition led by John Berkeley was organized in 1621. By early 1622 the works were completed and the furnace was ready to put into blast. On March 22, 1622, coordinated Indian raids throughout the region destroyed many settlements including the furnace.
As part of this day, we will have: living history performances, militia demonstrations, archaeological guided tours, musical performances, period demonstrations, children’s period games and activities, and food vendors.
