About
The Chesterfield County Police Department Citizen's Police Academy offers Chesterfield County residents an opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of police practices and procedures. Offered 2 times a year, the Academy enhances communications between the Police Department and the community, and provides residents involvement with the Police Department through volunteer programs.
This free academy is open to all Chesterfield County residents and county business owners as well as members of any community or civic organization located in Chesterfield County.
Following successful attendance, the participant will receive a certificate of completion from the Chief of Police during a graduation ceremony.
Upcoming Academy Dates
2021 Spring Session (8-week academy) - Tuesdays, April 6 - May 25 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Eligibility Requirements
Participants must be adults and reside, own a business, or belong to a civic organization within Chesterfield County.
Applicants will be screened for activities that may disqualify them from participating in the academy. This includes, but is not limited to, a criminal history check, a Division of Motor Vehicles check, and a police contact check.
Participants will be required to show a valid Virginia Driver’s License or other photo identification at the first class session.

Activities
Participants will:
- Learn about specialized police units, including forensics, K-9 and SWAT
- Observe communications officers handling 911 calls
- Operate police RADAR
- Ride with a police officer on patrol (if desired)
- Watch a police canine search for drugs
Instructors will discuss:
- Criminal investigations
- Fraud
- Identity theft
- Other crime prevention topics
