Officer of Election
Did You Know?
Any person who serves as a member of a local electoral board, an assistant general registrar, or an office of election shall neither be discharged from employment, nor have any adverse personnel action taken against him, nor shall he be required to use sick leave or vacation time, as a result of his absence from employment due to such service, provided he gave reasonable notice to his employer of such service {Virginia Code Section 24.2-119.1}.
A confirmation letter for working election day can be provided upon request.

To serve as an officer of election you must:
- Be a registered voter of the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Enjoy meeting people and serving the public
- Be able to take direction, pay attention to detail and not be easily distracted
- Be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time
- Be able to lift 40 pounds with assistance
- Be available to work on election day from 5 a.m. until all the results have been tabulated and reported
- Not hold elected office or be the employee of an elected official
Officers of election are required to:
- Assist voters with casting their ballots
- Set up voting equipment and prepare the polling place for voting
- Oversee election procedures to ensure a fair and impartial election
- Close the polling place at 7 p.m. and remain until all closing duties have been completed

Officers of Election
Officers of election must complete training prior to working in his/her first election.
- This training requirement repeats every three years with the start of a new term of service (i.e. March 1, 2018 to Feb. 28, 2021).
- Must receive additional training when there is a change to election procedures and/or once a new law or regulation has taken effect.
Chief and Deputy Chief Officers of Election
Chief and Deputy Chief Officers of Election must attend a training class prior to each election in which he/she serves.
