Medical Assistance - Medicaid
The Medicaid program helps low-income individuals with payments for health and medical care. The Department of Medical Assistance Services pays the bills to providers
Eligibility
The local Social Service agency in the county where you live determines eligibility, by application.
Medicaid Programs
Medicaid is divided into three basic programs:
- Aged, Blind and Disabled
- Families and Children
- Long-Term Care
Differences from Medicare
Medicaid is different from Medicare. Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who are age 65 or older or disabled. The Social Security Administration administers the Medicare program.
You may apply for Medicaid by:

- How do I apply for benefits?

There are several ways to apply for benefits:
- Visit CommonHelp. At this website, you may apply for:
- Child Care Services
- Energy Assistance (Fuel, Crisis, or Cooling)
- Food Assistance (SNAP)
- Health Care Coverage
- Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
- Applications for Medicaid, SNAP, and TANF are now accepted over the phone at 855-635-4370
- You can visit our office Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. (no appointment is needed):

The toll-free number is 866-281-2448, and they are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- How can I get a new Medicaid card number?

If you misplace your card, contact your Medicaid worker regarding a replacement card.

You can renew your case on line at Commonhelp, or by calling Cover Virginia at 855-242-8282.
- What services are offered if I am approved?

There are a several options for long term services and supports. If you meet the criteria, you may choose from several services:
- Adult Day Centers
- Nursing Facility
- Personal Care Aides
- Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE)

- What if I need help with finding a provider?

For information on providers, you may call the Medicaid Member Hotline at 804-786-6145 or visit the Department of Medical Assistance Services website and complete a provider search.
- What happens if my Medicaid is terminated?

You will no longer have Long Term Services and Supports if you don’t have Medicaid insurance. Medicaid pays for your services.
