Smoketree Drive and Gordon School Road - Road Diet Study

About

A study is under review by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for a road diet on Smoketree Drive and Gordon School Road. The study identifies short-term and long-term improvements for the roads.

The short-term improvement involves restriping narrower vehicular travel lanes to allow a bike lane along the road. This would be accomplished during resurfacing activities by VDOT. VDOT tentatively plans to resurface Smoketree Drive (Courthouse Road - Pleasanthill Drive) and Gordon School Road (Ferryland Drive - Smoketree Drive) in 2022. The following sections of these roads are proposed for the road diet which will provide bike lanes:

  • Smoketree Drive from Courthouse Road to Yarrow Lane – Bike lane planned on both sides of road.
  • Smoketree Drive from Yarrow Lane to Gordon School Road – Bike lane planned on north side of road only; bicyclists would continue to share the sidewalk on the south side with pedestrians.
  • Gordon School Road from Smoketree Drive to Spirea Lane – Bike lane planned on north side of road only; bicyclists would continue to share the sidewalk on the south side with pedestrians.

The long-term improvement involves construction of a 10 ft.-wide shared-use path on the north side of Smoketree Drive from Courthouse Road to Yarrow Lane and on the south side of Gordon School Road along the elementary school property.
