Dog Licenses
Now Available: Lifetime Dog Licenses
Chesterfield County now offers a lifetime dog license for $10. The license will remain valid as long as the dog's rabies vaccination is kept up to date.
Which Dogs Must Have a License?
Any dog four months of age or older must have a license.
What Steps Are Necessary?
To obtain a dog license, you must:
- Provide a certificate of current rabies vaccination
- Pay the $10 license tax.
To Obtain a Dog License
- Print and complete a Dog License Application (PDF).
- You will need:
- Check or money order payable to Treasurer, Chesterfield County for $10
- Copy of the rabies certificate
- Proof that the dog has been spayed/neutered (if applicable)

What Do I Do with the License?
License tags should be securely fastened to a substantial collar worn by the dog.
The tag will be stamped or marked with the:
- Locality name
- Serial number
Dog license receipts should be kept in a safe place and should be available upon request for inspection by any Animal Services Officer.
How do I get a Kennel License?
Kennel licenses are available for those residing in an agricultural district who own more than three dogs. Kennel licenses are still issued annually and a Kennel License Application (PDF) must be completed each year. The license tax is payable on January 1 and must be paid no later than January 31 of each year.
The fees are as follows:
- Kennel - 20 dogs: $25
- Kennel - 50 dogs: $35
