Firefighter/EMT Testing Information

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in pursuing a career with Chesterfield Fire and Emergency Medical Services (CFEMS). Applications received between December 16, 2020 and June 28, 2020 have been reviewed and accepted applicants will be notified to register for testing. We understand that the process is lengthy and requires several steps. To help you plan for the process, see the schedule below.

STEP 1: Register for a written test session by July 24, 2020 (required).

All applicants must be registered to participate in the testing process. Failure to register will remove you from the applicant pool. Only applicants who have been invited through Sign-up Genius will be able to register using the email address provided on the application. The required password is included in the registration email.

Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Register early for a time that best suits your schedule!

A confirmation email will be sent upon completion of the registration. Additional reminders will be sent by email.

Written tests will be conducted at:

Eanes-Pittman Public Safety Training Center
6610 Public Safety Way
Chesterfield, VA 23832

STEP 2: Prepare for Test Day

Written Test:  The Study Guide is available, and was also made available to applicants in the job posting. It is included on the test registration site as well.

Complete the background investigation worksheet* (required): Applicants must bring a completed background investigation worksheet, to include copies of required documents with them for test entry. Requested information may require additional research to fully complete. We recommend you begin completing the worksheet as soon as possible. Incomplete packets of the worksheet along with copies of required documents may result in removal from the process.

*This worksheet is fillable using Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded for free.

Required documents:

Only submit COPIES of the required documents with your background packet. CFEMS will not be able to make copies for you on test day and is not responsible for lost items.

  • Any Fire/EMS related (i.e. Firefighter I and II, HazMat Operations, EMT-B, EMT-I, EMT-P) certifications, complete transcripts with name or letter from Department of Fire Programs (do not attach original documents)
  • College degree for graduates or unofficial copy of college transcript(s) for non-graduates
  • Military discharge record (i.e., DD214 or NG22)
  • FOR APPLICANTS WITH OUT OF STATE DRIVER’S LICENSES ONLY:  A current, original and official driving transcript from your state’s department of motor vehicles or department of transportation, dated no earlier than July 6, 2020.

Again, only submit COPIES of the required documents. CFEMS will not be able to make copies for you on test day and is not responsible for lost items.

STEP 3: SHOW UP - Attend your scheduled written test session

Show up prepared. Bring your valid driver’s license and completed background investigation packet.

  • Your valid driver’s license must be presented and is the only form of identification that will permit you to take the test.

*Note:  Governor Ralph Northam’s amended Executive Directive Seven extended the validity of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issued credentials to accommodate Virginians with driver’s licenses, identification cards, and vehicle registrations expiring during the COVID-19 crisis.

Those whose credential expires between March 15 and July 31 will have 180 days beyond the expiration date to renew, not to exceed October 31, 2020.

  • Applicants without a completed background investigation packet will not be permitted to enter the testing area.
  • Parking is available on site. Please follow the parking attendants’ directions.
  • We strongly encourage applicants to arrive early on test day. Applicants will not be permitted to test if not inside the lobby of the Eanes-Pittman Public Safety Training Center within 30 minutes prior to their scheduled session. A COVID-19 assessment will be conducted on every applicant upon entering the lobby.  Applicants are required to wear face coverings and are encouraged to bring their own. Any applicant who does not have a face covering will be provided one to wear.
