Accessibility - Ramp, Handrail & Guard Checklist

Handrails

  • Required on both sides of stairs and ramps that have a rise greater than 6 inches
  • Installed at a height of 34 to 38 inches above the walking surface
  • Have a circular cross section, 1.25 to 2 inches in diameter, or a non-circular shape with a perimeter dimension of 4 to 6.25 inches and a maximum cross section dimension of 2.25 inches
  • Ends extend horizontally at least 12 inches beyond the top riser, or either end of a ramp, and continue to slope for the depth of one tread beyond the bottom stair riser, and terminate at a wall, post or walking surface
  • A 36-inch clear width between handrails

Guards

  • Required along open-sided walking surfaces including stairs, ramps and landings that are located more than 30 inches above the floor or grade below
  • A minimum of 42 inches high
  • Open-sided stairs require both guard(s) and handrails

Stairs

  • At least 36 inches wide and have 36 inches clear width between handrails
  • Minimum tread depth of 11 inches
  • Maximum riser height of 7 inches
  • Landings at the top and bottom of stairways
    • Stair landings at least the width of the stairway/ramp served
    • Stair landing depth at least the width of the stair, but for straight stair runs it does not have to exceed 48 inches
    • Stair landing dimensions must also provide adequate door maneuvering clearances per 2009 ICC/ANSI A117.1 Section 404
  • Doors do not reduce the required width/length of the stairway by more than 50%

Ramps

  • Maximum ramp slope of 1 in 12 and maximum ramp rise between landings of 30 inches
  • Edge protection is required; see the second diagram for options
  • At least 60 inches wide and at least the width of the widest part of the ramp run
  • Landings at the bottom and top of each ramp, points of turning, entrance, exits and at doors
    • Ramp landings at least 60 inches in the direction of travel and 60 inches by 60 inches at changes in direction
    • Ramp landings at least the width of the stairway/ramp served
    • Stair landing dimensions must also provide adequate door maneuvering clearances per 2009 ICC/ANSI A117.1 Section 404

405.9 Edge Protection

Edge protection complying with Section 405.9.1 or 405.9.2 shall be provided on each side of ramp runs and at each side of ramp landings.

Exceptions

  1. Edge protection shall not be required on ramps not required to have handrails and that have flared sides complying with Section 406.3.
  2. Edge protection shall not be required on the sides of ramp landings serving an adjoining ramp run or stairway.
  3. Edge protection shall not be required on the sides of ramp landings having a vertical drop-off of 1/2 inch (13 millimeter) maximum within 10 inches (255 millimeters) horizontally of the minimum landing area specified in Section 405.7.
  4. Edge protection shall not be required on the sides of ramped aisles where the ramps provide access to the adjacent seats and aisle access.

405.9.1 Extended Floor Surface

The floor surface of the ramp run or ramp landing shall extend 12 inches (305 millimeters) minimum beyond the inside face of a railing complying with Section 505.

405.9.2 Curb or Barrier

A curb complying with Section 405.9.2.1 or a barrier complying with Section 405.9.2.2 shall be provided.

405.9.2.1 Curb

A curb shall be a minimum of 4 inches (100 millimeters) in height.
