Special Olympics Virginia Area 6 is a year-round program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Anyone 8 or older who has an intellectual disability can become a Special Olympics athlete. Special Olympics provides through its Young Athletes™ program, a developmentally appropriate play program for children with intellectual disabilities ages 2 through 7.
