Leadership for the 21st Century Scholarships

The Chesterfield County Black History Month Celebration Program sponsors the Leadership for the 21st Century Scholarships for eligible Chesterfield County Public Schools students.  The scholarships are designed to recognize and reward the achievements and contributions of Chesterfield County high school seniors.

Megan Bale  (1)

Megan Bale attends the Maggie L. Walker Governor's School, where she has a 4.27 GPA. She plans to study business at the University of Virginia. Megan has participated in cross-country and track, and is a member of the Spanish club, model congress and the debate team. Megan has completed community service at Richmond Habitat for Humanity, homeless shelters and Hands On Greater Richmond. She enjoys tutoring, volunteering at a preschool and serving as a camp counselor.

Madyson Fitzgerald Scholarship Winner 2019 (1)

Madyson Denise Fitzgerald attends Matoaca High School, where she has a 4.46 GPA. She plans to study journalism at the University of Richmond. She currently writes for an online teen publication called Affinity Magazine.  She has served as the American Red Cross Club president, participated in the Virginia Girls State program, and is a member of the Chesterfield Youth Services Citizen Board, National Honor Society and Freshmen SPIRIT mentor program. She's also a SAFE teen ambassador.


Elon Hairston attends James River High School and has a 4.67 GPA. She plans to study biology and pre-med at George Mason University. A member of the track and field team, Elon also participates in the One Community club, Beta Club, National Honor Society and the MU Alpha Theta math honor group. She has completed community serve work at First Baptist Church of South Richmond and the Chester YMCA. Fascinated with learning, she considers herself a "lifelong student".


Destiny Hunt attends Thomas Dale High School and has a 4.5 GPA. She plans to study political science. Destiny has participated on the tennis and track and field teams, and is a member of the Beta Club, Future Business Leaders of America, the Keyettes club, and the National English and National Science honor societies. She has volunteered at Chester Fest, Lucy Corr Assisted Living and charity events, and is active in her church's Bible Quizzing Program.

DeAndre McEwen

DeAndre McEwen, Jr. attends Meadowbrook High School and has a 4.1 GPA. He plans to study journalism. DeAndre is a member of the MBK tennis team, the WEB Dubois Honor Society, student council and the Academic Team. He has represented Meadowbrook at the 4-H Congress, and has participated in community service activities at Chalkley Elementary, the 4-H State Fair, the Meadowbrook Roar-a-thon and a local food bank. A gifted musician, DeAndre has performed for the governor.

Gabrielle Walker attends Monacan High School and has a 4.8 GPA. She plans to study either biology or art history, as well as Spanish. Gabrielle has  participated in the Model County Government, Spanish, Ecology and Beta clubs, and the National Honor and Art Honor societies. She has volunteered with the Little Sisters of the Poor, Manorcare Nursing Home, FC Richmond recreational soccer league, and Girl Scouts. Gabrielle enjoys painting, drawing, crafts and art history.
