Applying to become a Notary Public

Claiming a Notary Public Commission
- Clarifications on expiration dates or status of application processing should be posed to the Secretary of the Commonwealth directly (804-786-2441).
- When the notary commission has been issued, the Secretary of the Commonwealth will send a notice to the applicant.
- No appointment is necessary; however, it is suggested that you contact the Clerk’s Office to confirm your commission is ready for pickup.
- When appearing to claim your commission, you should be prepared to present
- confirmation received from the Secretary of the Commonwealth
- government-issued photo I.D.
- $10 Clerk’s fee. Payment Types Accepted
NOTE: Commissions expire if not claimed within 60 days of the commission date. Applicants who do not claim their commission within 60 days must re-apply.

Note
Recording hours are subject to change in the event of inclement weather or holiday closings. Filing parties are encouraged to call the Clerk's Office in advance to ascertain any deviation from normal recording hours.
Filings
The Court does not accept case-related filings via the internet, email or fax. Filings are accepted via mail, courier or hand delivery.
Location
The Circuit Court Clerk's Office is on the first floor of the Courts Building located at the intersection of Ironbridge Road (Route 10) and Courthouse Road. The Courthouse is a large brick building with white columns and a circular drive.
Parking
Parking is permitted in any area except those that are gated, marked "reserved," or designated for jurors. There is no fee for parking.
