Jurisdiction of the Circuit Court

Criminal jurisdiction of the Circuit Court includes:

  • All felony cases
  • Misdemeanor cases originating by Grand Jury action
  • Appeals from the General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts (Unless appealed, traffic infractions are handled by the General District Court or Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court)

Criminal Fees

When an individual is convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in the Circuit Court, court imposed fines, costs and/or restitution (e.g., court debt) will be assessed against the defendant. View payment options.

Virginia Judiciary Case Information

The Virginia Judiciary Online Case Information System 2.0 allows users to conduct statewide searches for criminal and traffic cases that have been filed in any general district court, any juvenile and domestic relations district court, or any circuit court other than Alexandria Circuit Court and Fairfax Circuit Court. Information regarding criminal charges or case dispositions is not provided over the telephone or via email.

Case Alert Subscription System (CASS)

A part of the Virginia Judiciary Online Case Information System 2.0, the Case Alert Subscription System (CASS) can be used to receive alerts for an upcoming criminal or traffic hearing case. CASS alerts will be sent as an email message and/or an SMS text message. There are no fees charged to use CASS. Updates received through CASS are not intended to be, and are not a substitute for, the official record or legal notice of a court event; CASS is a courtesy reminder service.
