Personal Property tax is assessed on the value of motor vehicles, motorcycles, trailers and boats that are stored, garaged, or parked in Chesterfield County.

Most automobiles are assessed based on the clean loan value listed in the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Official Used Car Guide, as of January 1. Current year models are assessed using a percentage of their cost reported to DMV based on the motor vehicle sales price. Vehicles are assessed for the number of months they are sited in Chesterfield County.

Other property subject to personal property tax include:

  • Mobile homes
  • Recreational vehicles
  • Trailers

All property must first be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles. They must then be registered with the Commissioner of Revenue. All property is taxable based on ownership. Personal Property taxes on motor vehicles are prorated on a monthly basis, while mobile homes are not.
