Chesterfield County receives award for 37th consecutive year

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — The Chesterfield County Accounting Department was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for its comprehensive annual financial report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017. This is the 37th consecutive year that Chesterfield County has received this prestigious award, continuously meeting the changing financial reporting requirements.

The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by the county.

“The dedicated staff preparing this report proactively interpreted and planned for the new reporting requirements before the intense report compilation process began,” said Patsy Brown, accounting director. “A high level of collaboration occurs during compilation to finalize the complex disclosures required for local government and to produce a timely, high-quality financial report. I commend the financial reporting staff who worked so diligently on the report and earned this recognition.”

The county’s comprehensive annual financial report was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.

The Government Finance Officers Association established the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program in 1945. It encourages and assists state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principles to prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that evidence the spirit of transparency and full disclosure and then recognizes individual governments that achieve that goal.
