CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — Chesterfield County has been recognized with two energy-related awards during November. The Virginia Energy Efficiency Leadership Council awarded the county first place for local government for its comprehensive energy management program. For the eighth consecutive year, the Virginia Association of Counties also awarded Chesterfield its Go Green Award.

The Virginia Energy Efficiency Leadership Award highlights “energy efficiency champions” across the commonwealth for saving money on energy expenditures while reducing energy consumption. The Go Green award program recognizes environmental policies and practical actions that reduce emissions and save local governments money.

Chesterfield County prides itself on being good stewards of the environment while still maintaining quality programs and services,” said Scott Zaremba, deputy county administrator for management services. “Receiving these two awards is a proud accomplishment and acknowledges the county’s commitment to this effort.”

The county’s comprehensive energy-management program has led to a cumulative savings of more than $1.3 million in five years. The program’s goal is to reduce energy use while maintaining occupant comfort and productive working environments. Instrumental to the program’s success is energy-management software that monitors costs and use, and measures results.

The program initiates activities that enhance energy efficiency among county facilities. For example, the county placed interactive, real-time utility monitoring kiosks in the county’s 13 middle schools, which allow students to view school energy use in real-time.
