Library Program Recognized for Brilliant Ideas at Work

June 15, 2017

“Play Smart with Toddlers” provides play, learning for kids and parents

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — Chesterfield County Public Library’s “Play Smart with Toddlers” program has been recognized as a National Association of Counties “Brilliant Ideas at Work” award recipient.

The monthly program, instituted at the Clover Hill Library, provides an informal atmosphere for parents to enjoy playing with their child while learning tips about how play supports their child’s development and encourages early literacy skills. Parents can connect with community professionals with expertise in helping children from infancy through the age of three.

The program offers toys to children in eight categories: blocks, puzzles, books, dramatic play, infant toys, transportation, manipulatives and music. No technology is used in this program, based on the idea that the simpler the toy, the more complex the child’s learning.

“Play is incredibly important to a child’s development, and ‘Play Smart with Toddlers’ focuses on giving parents the knowledge and tools to continue the toddlers’ learning at home,” said Rose Marie Green, assistant branch manager at Clover Hill. “CCPL has focused on partnering with county departments, such as Mental Health Support Services and Chesterfield County Police, to provide information about child raising and child development for parents, as well as local contacts for partner departments.”

The library’s program is one of 100 NACo Brilliant Ideas at Work winners, part of NACo President Bryan Desloge’s presidential initiative. Winners showcase some of the best innovations in county government. The program will be recognized next month at a special reception and at the NACo Achievement Awards Luncheon.

The first “Play Smart with Toddlers” program was held in September 2016. To register for an upcoming program, visit .
