Is Virginia’s First Water Distribution Section to Achieve DEQ’s Environmental Enterprise Certification

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has recognized the Chesterfield County Department of Utilities’ Water Distribution section for going above and beyond what is required by law to protect the environment. The DEQ has named the section an Environmental Enterprise by accepting the section into its stringent Virginia Environmental Excellence Program. Environmental Enterprises are defined as companies or organizations that have taken action to be responsible stewards of the environment by reducing their environmental footprints beyond what is required by law. Chesterfield County’s Water Distribution section is the only such section in Virginia to achieve this honor.

Chesterfield’s Water Distribution section follows both of the county’s wastewater treatment facilities and its Wastewater Collection section in this achievement. The county’s Proctors Creek Wastewater Plant was the first wastewater plant in Virginia to receive the Exemplary Environmental Enterprise certification. The Virginia Environmental Excellence program was established to encourage superior environmental performance among facilities and organizations with already strong environmental records.

“Having our water distribution section recognized as an Environmental Enterprise in the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program is another milestone accomplishment for us,” said George B. Hayes, P.E., director of the Chesterfield County Utilities Department. “Being stewards of environmental excellence is a priority for Chesterfield County. This is a tremendous success that is a direct result of our employees’ dedication to ensure our programs meet and exceed our customers’ expectations while also being good stewards to the environment.”
