Man Charged in Officer-Involved Shooting

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – Chesterfield Police have charged a man in relation to an officer-involved shooting that occurred around 7:30 a.m. in the 3000 block of Rycliff Avenue on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016.

Chad T. Mrotek, 30, has been charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit murder, attempted first-degree murder, attempted capital murder of a police officer and use of threatening or indecent language over the public airways in relation to the incident.

On Jan. 3, police were called to a suspicious person in the 3000 block of Rycliff Avenue. Once on scene, the responding officer observed an adult male suspect, later identified as Mrotek, armed with a knife breaking into the residence. The officer pursued Mrotek into the residence and confronted him. When confronted, Mrotek charged the officer with the knife. The officer fired a single shot, striking Mrotek.

Mrotek, of the 4400 block of Cogbill Road, was transported to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. He remains in police custody at VCU Medical Center, where he is receiving treatment. His court date is pending and no arrest photo is available. He was known to the homeowner, who was not injured during this incident. No officers were injured during the incident.

Police continue their investigation. The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.
