County MHSS, Local Church Partner for Holiday Gift-Giving

December 11, 2015
Mental Health Support Services

12-11-15 MHSS Gift GivingCHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — About 100 clients of Chesterfield County Mental Health Support Services will have a merrier holiday season, thanks to a partnership between MHSS and Chester United Methodist Church.

Church members “adopted” MHSS clients, buying gifts of clothes, shoes and games for adults who are part of MHSS programs. MHSS staff collected the gifts Thursday, and started distributing the brightly wrapped packages to clients throughout Chesterfield County.

“We see excitement, we see joy. It’s very emotional for the families,” said Sonja Jackson, a MHSS service coordinator who organizes the sharing-tree program with the church. “This is one of the biggest things we do all year, and my favorite activity all year.”

Chester United Methodist Church has partnered with MHSS since the inception of the sharing tree program five years ago. Some of the program’s recipients participate in church programs.

“Our church has a heart for the community and for all those who have need,” said the Rev. Sylvia S. Meadows, the church’s senior pastor. “It brings all of us joy to represent Christ through gift-giving to those who wouldn’t receive gifts otherwise.”

The partnership is just one of the ways MHSS ensures its clients are cared for during the holidays. The department also partners with the Chesterfield/Colonial Heights Christmas Mother, with Chesterfield Colonial Heights Alliance for Social Ministry, the Kiwanis Children’s Christmas Party, and with anonymous donors to provide meals and gifts to clients and others who are in need during the holidays.
