Hayes Appointed Director of Utilities

January 05, 2015

Director George B. Hayes, P.E.CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — After a competitive national recruitment, George B. Hayes was appointed as the director of the Chesterfield County Department of Utilities today. Hayes has over 22 years of progressive experience in the water and wastewater industry. He replaces Roy E. Covington, who recently retired. Hayes was hired by Covington in 2006 as the assistant director.

As assistant director, Hayes was responsible for leading a staff of 183 employees in the Operations and Maintenance Division. Under his leadership, the division was successful in meeting the stringent Chesapeake Bay nutrient removal regulations by completing biological nutrient removal upgrade projects at the county’s two wastewater plants. The projects, worth approximately $130 million, were the largest ever done by the Department of Utilities. The department also successfully negotiated two State Water Quality Improvement Fund grants and received $24.4 million to support the nutrient removal projects.

Hayes graduated from Manhattan College with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and is a registered Professional Engineer in the commonwealth of Virginia. He also is active in numerous water and wastewater professional organizations, including the Virginia American Water Works Association, Virginia Water Environment Association, Virginia Association of Municipal Wastewater Agencies and the Virginia Nutrient Credit Exchange Association.

“It is an absolute honor and privilege to lead the utilities team and continue to serve our customers, county administration and the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors as the next director of utilities,” Hayes said. “I am committed to ensuring the department continues to provide our customers exceptional products and services at extremely competitive rates.”

Hayes lives in Glen Allen with his two children.
