Intermediate-Care Facility Opens in County

August 12, 2014
Mental Health Support Services

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — Chesterfield County Mental Health Support Services celebrated the opening of Galloway Place, an intermediate-care facility, on Thursday, Aug. 7.

In 2005, a need for an intermediate-care facility was identified to assist intellectually-challenged individuals who have medical needs that require more care than can be provided at home. Studies have shown that those with cognitive and verbal challenges do better in an intermediate-care facility, than in a nursing home.

The Board of Supervisors and the Community Services Board not only wanted the design to provide residents a place to live and play in a safe, friendly, residential setting, but also to complement the existing community, enhance accessibility and encourage greater community connectivity.

RRMM Architects designed Galloway Place to accommodate 12 residents with 9,250 square feet of carefully crafted spaces, including private bedrooms and bathrooms for residents, semi-private family and activity rooms and communal areas, including kitchen, dining and living areas. The outside was also carefully designed. Small patio areas provide quiet places for contemplation. Larger gathering areas accommodate group activities. Free-form walkways and lighted paths lead to open-framed pergolas. Sensory gardens use a variety of native-plant species designed to appeal with color, sound, smell and touch.

Galloway Place offers residents the comforts of home and enables them to go on outings with staff, go home for the holidays, or go out to lunch or on excursions with their families. Yet, medical assistance is readily available every day, all year long.

Alternatives of Virginia has contracted with the CSB to operate the home.
