Three Inducted into Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame

October 25, 2012
Senior Services

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — This year, 15 Chesterfield County seniors were nominated for the Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame for contributions they’ve made to the community since the age of 65, collectively totaling 87,291 hours. Each was recognized on Oct. 25 during a ceremony at the Chesterfield County Government Complex.

Nominees were Doris Bachmann, Rebecca Brock, Tom Connolly, Rev. Dr. Rosalie Hatcher, Steven Hudak, Carol Hotchkiss, Phillip Johnson, Eugene Manner, Lois Moore, Doris Morris, David Palumbo, Robert “Bob” Preston, Carolyn Simpson, Clarence Steed and Aurora Tatro.

While each has made valuable contributions to the community and is appreciated, only three could be selected for induction into the Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame this year.

Those inducted were Doris Bachmann, Tom Connolly and Steven Hudak. The inductees will be recognized at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Nov. 14.

Doris Bachmann was a medical assistant overseeing a doctor’s office until her retirement in June 1985. She has invested 180 hours at Clover Hill Elementary School, working lovingly with a kindergarten class and offering art instruction to fourth graders. Her dedication and positive outlook have enriched the students’ lives.

Tom Connolly worked as an electrical engineer until his retirement in 1995. He has volunteered 2,130 hours at Salem Church Elementary School during the past six years. Considered an integral part of the school community, Connolly has served in a myriad of roles as needed, including helping with reading groups, the bike unit, the bus and the cafeteria.

Steven Hudak was a program manager at Civil Works Construction Projects until his retirement in January 2002. Hudak volunteers with Court Appointed Special Advocates. He visits children in their homes, emergency shelters, foster homes or schools, which gives him the information he needs to make fact-based recommendations to the court in the best interest of the children. In his role as an advocate for children, he has driven thousands of miles for which he has not been compensated. Hudak also participates in the AARP Virginia Tax Aide Program screening applicants for the Commonwealth Clinic.
