Funding Received to Reduce Alcohol-Related Crashes in Chesterfield County

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA — There were 242 alcohol-related crashes involving 15- to 24-year-old drivers in Chesterfield County between 2009 and 2010, according to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. To help reduce these crashes, Substance Abuse Free Environment Inc., or SAFE, a community coalition in Chesterfield County, has a contract with the state through Virginia Commonwealth University to receive more than $170,000.

The state received the funding for this project through the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant, from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

SAFE will use this funding to conduct a needs assessment examining factors such as time and location of crashes and vicinity to retail or licensed establishments selling alcohol. The coalition will gather input from youths and community members about the issue and identify contributing factors that lead to alcohol-related crashes in this age group. The needs assessment will be used to develop a strategic plan that will include action steps to reduce these crashes in Chesterfield County.
“SAFE is excited about the opportunity to partner with VCU to address those factors in our community that contribute to alcohol-related auto crashes,” said Wayne Frith, executive director of SAFE.

SAFE has hired Regina Whitsett as the grant coordinator. Whitsett served as the education coordinator for the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for the past five years.

“Regina’s extraordinary background in working with communities to implement alcohol-abuse prevention and reduction strategies will serve the Chesterfield community well,” Frith said.

Those interested in working on the issue or contributing to the initiative are invited to contact Regina Whitsett at 804-694-7794 or whitsett@chesterfieldsafe.org
