Chesterfield Federal Credit Union Warns Of Phishing Attacks

July 18, 2008
Public Affairs

Chesterfield County, VA - On Thursday, July 17, 2008, Chesterfield Federal Credit Union discovered that phishing phone calls had been randomly sent attempting to fraudulently gather credit card information from its members.

Phishing is the act of sending an e-mail or phone call to a user, falsely claiming to be an established legitimate business in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for fraud and/or theft. The phone call or e-mail directs a user to long-distance number or Web site where they are asked for personal information. However, the phone number or Web site is bogus and set up only to steal the user's information.

In the case of Chesterfield Federal Credit Union, a telephone call claiming to be from Chesterfield Credit Union informed the recipient that their debit card had been deactivated and asked them to call a long distance number to have the card reactivated. Immediately upon learning of the scam on Thursday, Chesterfield Federal Credit Union placed warnings on its Web site and contacted the Chesterfield County Police Department. Members were advised that these phone calls were not legitimate and were told not to respond. In addition, the credit union is sending warning e-mails to employees of Chesterfield County and Chesterfield County Public Schools, informing them of the phishing attempts and advising them not to respond. Chesterfield Federal Credit Union has routinely advised its members that requests for any type of personal member information will never be made through e-mail or telephone. Last year, the credit union upgraded its home banking security to provide an additional layer of protection against phishing attacks. This is the first attempt at phishing through telephone that has affected Chesterfield Federal Credit Union. Phone numbers for this phishing attempt were gathered through a variety of sources including listserves, websites and online telephone directories. Chesterfield Federal Credit Union member information remains secure and was not used to gather the phone numbers. Most of the phone numbers solicited were not Chesterfield Federal Credit Union members. At this time, no information is available on the number of members who were affected by this phishing threat.

Any members who were affected are advised to call 1-800-449-7728 24 hours a day to report their card stolen. Member Service Representatives are available to assist members in filing the proper claims to recover any losses. Chesterfield Federal Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative founded 45 years ago by the administration of Chesterfield County and Chesterfield County Public Schools as a method of pooling their funds to reap the benefits of lower cost loans, higher dividend rates and lower fees. Since then, CFCU has expanded to include Amelia County, Amelia County Public Schools, Brandermill Community Association and several Select Employment Groups. CFCU has three branch locations, one in Chesterfield on Public Safety Way, one in Midlothian at the intersection of Hull Street Road and Old Hundred Road in the Market Square Shopping Center, and one in Amelia County. Members also can access the credit union through eight shared branches located in Chesterfield, Midlothian, Richmond, Colonial Heights and Eastern Henrico County and through a shared network of over 45,000 free ATMs nationwide. Unlike other financial institutions, credit unions are owned and controlled by their members. There are no outside stockholders and no paid Board of Directors. All of the credit union's excess earnings are returned to members in the form of lower interest rates on loans, higher dividend rates on deposits, lower fees and additional services.

The all-volunteer Board of Directors is democratically elected by the membership, and each member is entitled to one vote regardless of the amount they have on deposit. Contact: Chris J.
