Program Surpasses $1 Million Mark For Collecting Back Child Support

September 11, 2007

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - In August, the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office's Support Enforcement Program surpassed the $1 million mark for back child support collected. Since its inception, the program has collected $1,023,469.79. In 2004, the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the Chesterfield County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court and the Virginia Division of Child Support Enforcement, began discussing the establishment of a Child Support Enforcement Program for people incarcerated for nonpayment of child support. The first inmate was assigned to the new program on April 21, 2005. Under this partnership, the Sheriff's Office places individuals in the Support Enforcement Program under the direction of the courts. Sheriff's Office personnel monitor payments to the Division of Child Support to ensure individuals are making payments as required. The Sheriff's Office also seeks employment with local businesses for those who enter the program while unemployed. Without the corporation of all those involved, including local business owners, this program would not be successful.
