Monologues About Domestic And Sexual Violence To Be Presented At Swift Creek Mill Theatre

August 10, 2007
Domestic and Sexual Violence Resource Center

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY - Chesterfield County police responded to 1,663 calls for domestic violence in 2006. That same year, the county's sexual-assault coordinator served 267 clients, most of whom were children. Since 2000, 20 adults and 15 children in Chesterfield County have lost their lives as a result of domestic violence. With increased public awareness about the issue, future deaths, injuries and the long-lasting effects of trauma can be prevented. On Sept. 29 and Oct. 4, a series of monologues based on actual victim experiences will be performed at the Swift Creek Mill Theatre. "The Heart of the Matter: A Journey Toward Healing," will be presented by The Domestic and Sexual Violence Resource Center/The Chesterfield Domestic Violence Task Force and the YWCA of Richmond. The monologues were adapted from victim stories by Patricia Jones-Turner, coordinator of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Resource Center, and cover a range of domestic- and sexual-violence cases. Victims who are portrayed come from diverse backgrounds and various socio-economic statuses. Some of the victims are men. "It gives a well-rounded perspective on domestic and sexual violence and how widespread it is," Jones-Turner said. "And because the performances are going to be intense, I think the public will take it seriously." Performances will be Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m. with doors opening at noon. A second performance will be Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. Tickets are $22 and include a buffet before the show. Swift Creek Mill Theatre is at 17401 Jefferson Davis Highway, Colonial Heights. Tickets can be purchased by calling (804) 748-5203. Donations to benefit domestic- and sexual-violence resource programs will be accepted during both shows. "The Heart of the Matter: A Journey Toward Healing" is recommended for audiences 18 and older. For more information, call Patricia Jones-Turner at 706-1272.
