Board To Recognize Emergency Communications Center For Earning Accreditation

July 19, 2006
Emergency Communications Center

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - At its regularly scheduled meeting July 26, the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors will recognize the county's Emergency Communications Center for having earned accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, or CALEA. CALEA is an independent, nonprofit organization and is the only organization that offers a Public Safety Communications Accreditation Program. The Chesterfield County ECC joins a select few emergency-communications departments to have earned such accreditation. The accreditation symbolizes professionalism, excellence and competence based on standards set by experts in the field of emergency communications. The process took about two years and involved 216 standards. A report by the independent team that assessed the ECC stated: "The assessment team observed the Chesterfield County Emergency Communications Center … to be an organization consisting of polite, enthusiastic professionals who are building a relationship of trust and respect with the citizens of Chesterfield County and all agencies they provide with telecommunications services." The accreditation requires the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of files and policies and procedures, as well as an annual report to CALEA. Reaccreditation also is required every three years to maintain the status with CALEA. Already, the Chesterfield County ECC is serving as a benchmark for the accreditation, having recently agreed to assist CALEA in the production of a video featuring the communications accreditation program.
