CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - Iron Bridge Park, located on Route 10 in Chesterfield County, will be renamed Harry G. Daniel Park at Iron Bridge at a ceremony on Tuesday, April 13, at 4 p.m. Harry G. Daniel was first elected to the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors to represent the Dale District in 1979. He served five terms on the board, until 1999, and was elected by his peers six times to serve as chairman.
Daniel introduced the concept of a county charter, which was later approved by both Chesterfield County voters and the Virginia General Assembly, and became the county's form of government. He also led the effort for the county to become a member of the Capital Region Airport Commission, which gave the county proportionate representation with Richmond and Henrico County. Daniel was instrumental in seeing significant transportation improvements begin or take place during his tenure, including Route 288, Interstate 95's Walthall interchange, Chippenham Parkway, Interstate 895, and Courthouse and Hopkins roads.
In addition to his service as a Chesterfield County supervisor, Daniel served many other local, regional and state organizations, including the Chesterfield Planning Commission, Capital Region Airport Commission, Richmond Regional Planning Commission, Metropolitan Economic Development Council, Greater Richmond Partnership, Metropolitan Business Foundation, Virginia Association of Counties, Virginia Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations and Gov. George Allen's Commission on Champion Schools. Iron Bridge Park opened in the Dale District in 1986 during Daniel's term on the Board of Supervisors.
