Motorist Assistance
The
Chesterfield County Police Department has a Motorist Assistance Team
staffed by volunteers. Members of the team are asked to work a minimum
of 16 hours per month and often patrol during the busiest times of the
work day. Members may be called on to jump start a vehicle, deliver
a gallon of gasoline to a stranded motorist, or direct traffic at the
scene of an accident, fire or crime scene. This service frees patrol
officers from this duty and allows them to respond to more urgent calls
for service.
The unit currently has an authorized strength of 12 volunteers and three
specially marked Motorist Assistance Team automobiles.
For more information on this or any other volunteer opportunities with
the Chesterfield County Police Department, please call (804) 318-8695.
Team member duties can include:
- Patrolling an assigned area and responding to calls as advised by the Emergency Communications Center in lieu of police officers
- Working with officers at crash scenes when additional traffic control assistance is necessary
- Responding to hazardous road conditions such as debris in the road, high water, ice spots etc.
- Assisting officers at intersections where traffic lights are not working
- Relieving officers who are awaiting tow truck services after either a vehicle breakdown, crash, abandoned vehicle, or a driver is arrested
- Assisting officers to arrange traffic detours in the event of a crime scene, crash or fire
- Assisting officers with traffic control at public events including the Chesterfield County Fair and local parades etc.
- Providing directions and guidance to motorists
