Officer Joseph G. Diman

On May 4, 2006 Officers Joseph Diman and Gary Buro were dispatched to a domestic call on Totty Street in Ettrick. After entering the residence, the officers approached one of the subjects involved in the dispute. Without warning, the man raised a firearm and began shooting at the officers. Officer Buro was immediately struck and fatally injured. The subject then started shooting at Officer Diman who was able to draw his weapon and return fire. During the exchange, Officer Diman was initially struck in the chest; the bullet was stopped by his vest. His right hand was also struck causing him to drop his weapon. Officer Diman then attempted to retreat to another area of the residence. The subject followed him, continually firing, striking Diman in the thigh, ankle and back. The shot to his back was stopped by his ballistic vest. Realizing that he had nowhere to go, Officer Diman turned around and engaged the subject in hand to hand combat. He was able to dislodge the weapon from the subject and place handcuffs on him. Diman then radioed for help. It wasn’t until the subject was handcuffed that Diman was able to determine that the perpetrator had been shot during the exchange of fire; the wound proved to be fatal.

As a result of his actions and injuries Officer Joseph G. Diman is awarded the Medal of Valor, the Purple Heart, and the Combat Ribbon.
