Fire Station #1 - Chester

Fire Station #1 - Chester

Fire Station #1, located in downtown Chester, has the distinction of having received the first fire truck paid for by the county General Fund. A local welder, who was also chief forest fire warden, built it. This event in 1942, led to the establishment of the Chester Volunteer Fire Department, which was the first outside of a sanitary district. The Odd Fellows Lodge gave land for the building and the citizens cooperated to build the firehouse. Later, a second floor was added that included a large meeting hall and other improvements. Though the building was torn down in 1962, it was rebuilt as a two-story structure and remains operational today on the original site at 4325 Old Hundred Road. Station 1, staffed by 12 career and eight volunteer personnel, ran 1,853 calls in 1998.
