Lecture Planned On Battle Of The Crater

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - Emmanuel Dabney, a park ranger with Petersburg National Battlefield, will present a lecture about the Battle of the Crater May 24, 11 a.m.-noon, at Magnolia Grange, 10020 Iron Bridge Road. The talk will address the involvement of the U.S. Colored Troops and the impact this battle had on the Petersburg Campaign.

Dabney is a local authority on issues that faced blacks in antebellum, wartime and immediate post-war America.

In late June 1864, Union troops seemed to be unable to effectively defeat the Confederate forces. Along the Richmond and Petersburg front, two Union armies faced the gray-coated defenders. To end this stalemate before it dragged out much longer, a plan was developed along the Union siege line to blow a hole into the Confederate defenses and take Petersburg by direct assault.

This Union plan, while well designed, was poorly executed due to last-minute changes and a failure to recognize the Confederate troops' tenacity to hold on to Petersburg. The men involved in this battle from both sides could only recount acts of bravery, rage, courage and racism in the wake of its aftermath. The campaign would drag on for another eight long months.

Call (804) 777-9663 to make a reservation or to get more information about this presentation. This lecture is part of the "Celebrate Chesterfield" lecture series.

Time To Sign Up For Regional River Cleanup

Volunteers are being sought to participate in the James River Regional Cleanup on June 14, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at selected sites along the James in Central Virginia. This year's cleanup is being cosponsored by the James River Advisory Council and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

In its ninth year, the cleanup continues to grow. In addition to the river itself, attention also is focused on certain tributaries flowing into the James, such as Falling Creek, in an effort to create greater awareness about the James River watershed.

Past cleanups have seen hundreds of volunteers on foot and in boats dedicate part of a day to collect litter from the shoreline and water. In cleaning up the James, the volunteers create awareness about the need to take care of an invaluable natural resource while also learning about the dynamics of a watershed. Much of the litter collected originates upstream in roadside ditches, parking lots, etc., that drain to the river and its adjoining streams.

This year's event will include 11 official cleanup sites located as far west as Appomattox County and as far east as Charles City County, incorporating more than 60 miles of the James River watershed. Activities west of Mayo Island in Richmond are above the fall line in the nontidal portion of the river and primarily involve the collection of shoreline litter that is accessible by volunteers on foot or those paddling small craft such as canoes. Activities east of Falling Creek are below the fall line in tidal waters, where recreational craft, such as large johnboats, bass boats and other vessels, provide a significant benefit.

Registering as a participant has never been easier. Just log on to www.jamesriveradvisorycouncil.com, select a location from a list of official cleanup sites, and then complete the electronic entry form. Those who wish to participate also may call the James River Regional Cleanup information line at (804) 717-6688.

Participants are encouraged to arrive at their designated sites by 8:45 a.m. to sign in. All participants also are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes and bring gloves, water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Bags for the litter will be provided. Lunch will be provided for all participants.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA-County residents concerned that property in their neighborhoods is not being maintained properly, or worried that their community may deteriorate in the future, have a new place to turn to for advice and information.

The Chesterfield County Sustain Our Communities Committee, or SOCC, has developed a new Web page at www.chesterfieldcommunities.com to assist residents who have such concerns.

The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors created the SOCC in 2006 to help prevent the decline and deterioration of older communities. National research, as well as local experience within the Jefferson Davis Corridor and the village of Ettrick, has provided practical examples of how to prevent blight and sustain communities.

"We hope to assist our county residents in maintaining the health of their neighborhoods and surrounding communities," said Cliff Bickford, SOCC chairman.

The new Web page offers advice and program information, as well as a toolkit to assist residents with sustaining and improving their neighborhoods. The toolkit provides guidance in organizing a neighborhood association or strengthening an existing one.

"In my work as a professional neighborhood association administrator, I found that there are critical actions that neighborhoods can take to prevent decline," said SOCC member Bill Swift, who was instrumental in the toolkit's development. "We have written this advice down and want to make it available to all of our county residents."

For more information, contact Bickford at (804) 787-1419 or Latisha Jenkins, community improvement coordinator, at 748-1065.

County Joins Waterworks Nationwide To Recognize National Drinking Water Week

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA-From protecting the public through disease prevention and fire suppression, to benefiting the local economy by attracting businesses that create jobs, safe tap water plays many critical roles in a community such as Chesterfield County - roles that can easily be taken for granted when the water flowing from the faucet is crisp and clear.

That's why the Chesterfield County Department of Utilities is joining public waterworks across the nation in recognizing May 4-10 as National Drinking Water Week by encouraging water customers to take just a minute to consider just how important safe drinking water is to their community.

Chesterfield County is fortunate to have three sources of drinking water: Swift Creek Reservoir, the Appomattox River and the James River. County water customers also benefit from the fact that Chesterfield County's Utilities Department team is one of the best in the business, as evidenced by the fact that the water the department provides continuously meets or exceeds all drinking-water regulations and has never been in violation of a drinking-water standard, including those established by the Safe Drinking Water Act.

It's no small task meeting the many rigorous state and federal health standards for drinking water. At the county's Addison-Evans Water Plant, expert lab technicians and operations staff perform thousands of tests each month to ensure that the safety of the water flowing from hundreds of thousands of faucets, spigots and fire hydrates is one less thing for county residents to worry about.

Chesterfield County water customers soon will receive reports from the Department of Utilities to keep them aware of detailed information related to their drinking water. For more information, contact Courtney Battista, the Department of Utilities' customer relations officer, at (804) 748-1876.

Urban Tree Fair Aimed At Helping Suburban Homeowners Care For Trees

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA-Chesterfield County is cooperating with several area tree-service companies to hold the county's first Urban Tree Fair on April 26, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Urban Tree Fair will be held outdoors between the Lane B. Ramsey Administration Building and the Virginia Cooperative Extension office in the Chesterfield County government complex at Iron Bridge and Lori roads.

Sponsoring the event are Chesterfield County Building and Grounds, Virginia Cooperative Extension's Chesterfield County office, Arborscapes LLC, Bartlett Tree Experts, The Davey Tree Expert Co., True Timber and Arborcare Inc.

The term "urban trees" applies to all trees planted for the purposes of landscaping as well as naturally growing trees left in developed areas, such as those left standing when subdivisions are developed. Urban trees have certain challenges that natural trees don't have, such as too much mulch piled around them or trees that are planted too deeply in the ground.

Buildings and Grounds personnel will be on hand to discuss a "root-collar excavation" project that's ongoing in the county government complex while demonstrating the best ways to plant trees. Volunteer master gardeners with Virginia Cooperative Extension will discuss similar topics while also providing diagnoses of diseases and insects affecting all types of plants, including trees and woody shrubs. Visitors are encouraged to bring plant samples to aid in diagnosing problems.

Several certified arborists with area tree-service companies will be available to answer questions and demonstrate proper planting and pruning techniques. They also will discuss how to help damaged trees.

The Urban Tree Fair has been planned around the needs of the typical homeowner, who can watch, listen and learn methods to apply in their own yards.

The event is free. For more information, call (804) 751-4401.
